Bamako, the capital of Mali is a big mix of cultures that have made their impact on the city throughout history.
One of the oldest traditions is the weekly horseback riding contest.
Surrounded by junkyards and kitchen gardens you can find the city's local horse track stadium.
On Sundays in the neighbourhood Hippodrome, named after the racecourse, you can find residents from all over the city make their way to the tribunes on the north side of the race track.
In April the race is perfectly timed with sunset which wraps the adrenaline filled stadium with its golden light.
When the race is completed people in all ages gather to celebrate the winner of the day’s race.
Afterwards, while kids are playing football on the courts in the middle of the stadium, the local horsemen take their horses out on a walk.
