An urban oasis
In the heart of the Copenhagen neighborhood of Nørrebro lies Sjællandsgade Bad, a community bathhouse that has been lovingly run by the wonderful people of the Sjællandsgade Bad Association for the past 15 years.
When the operation of the bath was announced to go out for tender in 2026 — and the fear of losing this warm, diverse, and welcoming space arose — I reached out and offered my help. Together with Sjællandsgade Bad, we created a portrait series that highlights just how important this place is to so many people.
The bath guests themselves took part in creating the portraits, and their personal messages shine through as a heartfelt reminder of the deep sense of belonging a place can foster when you are met with respect and open arms.
I’ve never learned how to meditate, but maybe that’s what I’m doing here? I feel calm with myself. I feel my body — warm, then cold. It’s as if my mind is being reset, and I’m always happier when I leave. It feels like receiving a gift! Thank you.

I’m 86 years old and have been a regular guest at Sjællandsgade Bad for over 20 years.
As a former boxer, I used to relax in the sauna after training.
These days, I still enjoy the sauna at Sjællandsgade Bad every Wednesday
